Etchants & Chemicals

Metallographic etchants are used as part of the specimen preparation process, typically after the polishing phase.  These chemicals help reveal microstructural details that would not otherwise be as visible under a microscope, especially with mirror-like polished metal.  Etchants essentially stain microstructural grain boundaries, allowing for clearer inspection.

Different metals require different etchants and concentrations of etchants.  We stock the most popular chemicals for iron and steel related alloys such as Nital and Picral, but we can also source specialty etchants such as ASTM No. 30 and Kroll’s Reagent.

We also stock 200 proof ethanol and denatured alcohol for general use purposes but due to hazardous chemical regulations, this is available for Houston area shipping or customer pickup only.
