Located just North of Houston, METSUCO (“Metallurgical Supply Company”) has been around for over 30 years supporting various industries around the world. We supply products and services including energy, aerospace, automotive, and other heavy manufacturing companies as well as many testing labs and universities.
Our product line started off with an emphasis on metallographic equipment and consumables but has expanded over the years to include other quality testing products and services such as Charpy specimen broaches and broaching machines, nondestructive equipment and consumables, metrology devices such as calipers and micrometers, and calibration services. Metallurgical equipment such as hardness testers, microscopes, cut-off/sectioning machines, and grinding and polishing machines and the consumables that go along with those are still at our core though!
The process of procuring products has been changing over the years. With the new launch of the METSUCO site in 2019, we brought our 30 plus years of experience and economical pricing online. Our products are similar to what you can find at Buehler, Struers, Leco, and Allied but at a much more economic price.
Although founded in the early 1990’s, METSUCO was up for sale in 2014 as the owner at the time was looking to retire. The current owners decided to take the plunge and become entrepreneurs by purchasing METSUCO, but unfortunately timing couldn’t have been worse. We purchased at the peak of the oil and gas market in 2014 only to see that industry tumble for the next few years. It’s always a terrible feeling when you buy at the peak of a market and watch the value/price drop so quickly.
While most people in oil and gas do not need to be reminded how difficult that time period was, there was a silver lining. Because we went through years of low activity in oil and gas, we were able to spend a little more time talking and listening to our customers. The more time we spent understanding their needs, the more we came to learn how difficult the procurement process can be. From reliability of suppliers to having too many vendors, buying equipment is not always as simple as it should be.
Through these conversations, we began to evaluate ourselves and to see if we were part of the problem or if we could do something to improve the process. While we’re still in the early stages, we are striving to help make a difference. Keep an eye out and let us know what you think.
